Me, The Starving Artist

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

-Henry David Thoreau

You can not imagine the horror on my parents faces when I told them about my decision to go back to school to get my MA in Interior Design.  “Have you heard of the starving artist” said my dad.

Other complaints/ concerns I have heard from friends and family have been 1) Are you retarded?  Have you been paying attention to what is going on with our economy?  2)  You are never going to be able to pay back your student loans.  3) You are never going to be able to get a job with that degree.  And on and on…

You would think by people’s reactions that I had decided to sell all my possessions and move to a nudist colony, not get into an amazing design school and figure out all the red tape of the financial aid process by myself and put up the money for it by myself.  People are freaked.   Apparently my dear old step mother thinks I have gone off the deep end.  Two of her favorite words for me right now are “pitiful” and “pathetic”.

I just want to say that I have never been happier.  This is one of the best decisions of my life.  At the end of the day you just need to do what is best for you.
