Inspiration Photos

by Julie Daniel on June 8, 2009

in Design

Over the years I have been collecting pictures from magazines of rooms and spaces that I love.  I’ve had an ever growing pile of these magazines filled with post-its.  I’ve finally gotten around to tearing them all out and putting them in a binder.  I have them in these sections:  Living Rooms/  Offices, Kitchens & [...]

Tip of the Day: Take It Slow

by Julie Daniel on May 20, 2009

in Design

I’ve put this quote up before, but it needs repeating:
“Decorating, when not approached as a natural extension of who you really are, can be harmful, especially when it becomes so enslaved to status and fashion that it becomes artificial.  If more people would live honestly, putting the things they love around them, I believe Americans [...]

Tip of the Day: Hanging Artwork

by Julie Daniel on May 3, 2009

in Design

A common mistake that people make is hanging artwork or pictures that are way too small for the wall.  In my opinion, the bigger the better.  One little tiny picture on a large wall is a major no no.
A good rule to follow when hanging pictures is to hang them in odd numbers, 1, 3, [...]

Tip of the Day: Get Rid of One Thing

by Julie Daniel on April 16, 2009

in Design

Toss or donate one thing from your house that has negative associations with it.  For example, I like my computer chair but it has negative associations because I bought it because my freshman year roomate had the same one and loved it.  A few months later we had a falling out and I ended up [...]

Grand Plans for My House

by Julie Daniel on March 29, 2009

in Design, Organization

I know getting your home decorated and organized can be really frustrating and overwhelming so I wanted to share my room-by-room plans for my house.  When you list out what you need it is a lot easier to walk in to stores like IKEA and leave with what you need, not a bunch of stuff [...]

A Little Color Theory- Part 1

by Julie Daniel on March 16, 2009

in Design

My teacher handed this out in one of my Interior Design classes the other week and I wanted to share it with you.  The handout is a copy of a copy with no author on it.  I hate posting something without being able to give credit, but oh well!

New Desk Chair

by Julie Daniel on February 18, 2009

in Design

I am in major need of a new desk chair… I have had the same icky black generic one since Freshman year of college and I hate it.  I am breaking one of my own rules to not keep anything in your home you don’t love.  But I’ve learned in decorating focus on one thing [...]

A few decorating tips from Bunny Williams

by Julie Daniel on February 13, 2009

in Design

1} “Color should be complicated.  Break out of the rigidly coordinated schemes that most people rely on.  Instead, build on a base of varied neutrals, and add dashes of boldness throughout.  Think Impressionism, not paint-by-number.
2} Matching is for beginners.  Distinct eras and materials are better when blended.  If I have an antique wooden chest, I’ll [...]

Getting To Know Dorothy Draper

by juliemdaniel on February 5, 2009

in Design

The more I learn about Dorothy Draper the more I love her, and I think you will too.  Dorothy Draper was a fascinating lady who made waves in her time because of her use of bold colors and eccentric styles.  She paved the way for many women to come in the decorating and design in [...]

You may have noticed the new design of the website… bear with me as I fiddle and tweak things.  In design- whether it be web design or in your home, you are never finished, so don’t be overwhelmed if you feel you have a long ways to go in your home.  I think it is [...]

Coco Chanel Yet Again

by juliemdaniel on January 31, 2009

in Design

Can you tell I am on a Coco Chanel kick?
“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.”
-Coco Chanel

I couldn’t agree with her more.  I don’t understand why people spend thousands on designing their homes and the result is often cold, stuffy or not their style.  You can have a luxurious home, just make sure [...]

Domino Magazine… No More

by juliemdaniel on January 31, 2009

in Design

I am beyond grieved to learn that Domino Magazine it the latest casualty of our faltering economy… I loved that magazine.
I was browsing their website and found their manifesto.  I really liked it so I want to share it with you:

Our Manifesto

We swear by the 3 R’s: repaint, repaper, reupholster

Design Mistake: Rugs on top of Carpets

by juliemdaniel on January 14, 2009

in Design

9 times out of 10, it is not a good idea to put an area rug on top of carpet.  It makes a room seem smaller and cluttered.  Big no-no in my book.
Area rugs on top of carpet = no
Area rugs on top of hardwood = yes, especially if you are using the rug to [...]

Design Mistake: Furniture Placement

by juliemdaniel on December 19, 2008

in Design

A mistake often made: shoving all the furniture in a room up against the walls.  Chances are you really don’t need all that floor space, unless you are an avid dancer or have a busy 2 year old.  So pull that furniture away from the walls, create a seating area (an area rug can help [...]

Choosing a Color Palette

by juliemdaniel on December 18, 2008

in Design

If you are redecorating a room it might be a good idea to think of a color palette.
Start with the fabrics you will use: bed spread, bed skirt, window coverings, etc.  From there choose the wall color (it is easier to match a wall color to fabrics, not mach fabrics to a wall color, so [...]

Need a new look?

by juliemdaniel on December 18, 2008

in Design

Want to freshen up a room in your house and don’t know where to start?
Grab a pen and paper and make a list:
What do I love in this room?
What do I like?
What must stay?
What must go?
That will give you a good start on the direction you need to go to get a new look.
Remember, if [...]
